Lumberjack Birthday Party

**Thank you to Oriental Trading for sponsoring this post. As always all thoughts and opinions are my own.**

I can easily get a little outrageous when it comes to parties. I try not to and tell myself “this time it will be a small and simple party.” Then I start planning. But come on this one had to be big. First birthdays always need to be big! I was so excited to throw Finnegan’s birthday party. I have spent a number of years now throwing Dora themed, Frozen themed, unicorn parties. It was nice to have a change. Since buffalo plaid has been extremely popular this past year it was definitely the inspiration for the party. I like to stick to a few colors and build on what I already own. So for this party I stuck with red, black, and wood tones to create a fun lumberjack birthday party.

The dessert table is always my main focus for any party. My husband built me the beautiful wooden backdrop out of plywood and stained that along with the box for the cake to set on. I had most of the decorations already on hand. The small trees and buffalo plaid banner I bought in the Target dollar spot a.k.a. my favorite place! The letter-board is from Letter Board Love. The big wood slabs we had on hand that my husband cut from trees on his grandparents property. Finally my husband (gosh isn’t he amazing) put together the wood garland by drilling holes and lacing the jute. The tables consisted of using buffalo plaid bandanas, pine cones, trees, lanterns, and wood slabs that I ordered from Oriental Trading. Also I got this fun little dress up beards from Oriental Trading for people to take pictures and be lumberjacks!

For the cake and cupcakes I wanted a rustic look so I did not want the icing to look too perfect. Majority of the time I make all the desserts for the party. It can be a little stressful and my husband tells me every single time to just buy them but you know why not? I absolutely love how they turned out. On the top of the cake I used a fork to drag the icing in circles to make it look like the inside of a log. For the cupcakes I used rosemary sprigs on the top to look like trees.

I decided to do a little chili bar for food. I served white chili and regular chili with tons of toppings to make anyone happy. Oriental Trading is just the place to go to get all of my needs for any party. I was able to get all the plates, bowls, cups, silverware and napkins to use for the chili bar. Also I loved the buffalo plaid small table chalkboards to use for the toppings.

Once it was time to sing Happy Birthday I was not sure how Finnegan would react to eating his cupcake. At first there was a lot of inspection and not really sure what to do. But after the first taste he was hooked. What a fun time I had putting together this lumberjack birthday party and celebrating Finnegan turning one!
